Apostille for Argentina Residency: What Americans Need
Argentina’s immigration pages want foreign documents apostilled, in original form, and translated by an Argentine public translator. This guide shows how an American gets the FBI check, civil records and income proof apostilled at the right level, in the right order, before the flight.

Argentina accepts a US apostille, and the document decides who issues it
Argentina joined the Hague Apostille Convention by accession, in force since 18 February 1988 according to the HCCH status table (updated 30 June 2026). The HCCH table notes declarations for Argentina, so read its country entry before you rely on a general rule. For temporary residence as a rentista, pensionado or student, the Dirección Nacional de Migraciones (DNM) pages say a foreign-issued document needs legalization by an Argentine consulate or, when the issuing country is a Hague party, an apostille. The United States is one, so you want an apostille.
The next question is who issues it. An FBI Identity History Summary is a federal document, and the US Department of State, Office of Authentications, apostilles it. Birth, marriage and death certificates are state documents, and the issuing state apostilles them, usually through its Secretary of State. The HCCH page for the United States names a few states that route apostilles through another office, including Georgia, New Jersey and Wisconsin.
Argentina asks for originals. A scan of an apostilled FBI report does not satisfy a page that says all documents must be originals.
What each Argentine residence route asks from the US side
The DNM pages for rentista, pensionado and student residence show no publication date. They cite Disposición DNM 1.732/2023 and, for students, 2.802/2023. We read them on 26 October 2026, so check the DNM before you act.
| Route | US-side documents | Apostille | Validity window | Translation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rentista. | Foreign criminal record. Proof of income from assets of at least 5 Salarios Mínimo Vital y Móvil, not from work. | Foreign-issued documents need apostille or consular legalization. | No validity period stated. Confirm with the DNM. | Traductor público nacional, Colegio de Traductores legalization. |
| Pensionado. | Foreign criminal record. Certified regular lifetime pension of at least 5 SMVM. | Same rule. | No validity period stated. Confirm with the DNM. | Same rule. |
| Student. | Foreign criminal record. The electronic enrollment certificate is issued in Argentina. | Same rule for the US documents. | No validity period stated. Confirm with the DNM. | Same rule. |
| Minor or family member. | A foreign-issued birth certificate is the example the pages give. | Apostille or legalization. | Not stated. Confirm. | Same rule. |
| Citizenship. | Not confirmed. | Confirm with the Argentine consulate. | Confirm. | Confirm. |
| Digital nomad residence. | Not confirmed. | Confirm with the Argentine consulate. | Confirm. | Confirm. |
The pages say the applicant must be in Argentine territory. So you assemble the file in the US and carry the originals with you, or have them shipped. Residence is granted for one year and can be extended.
Which American office handles each document in an Argentina file
FBI Identity History Summary
The nationwide record is the usual US criminal record. It goes to the US Department of State, Office of Authentications. The Argentine pages do not name the FBI, so ask which US record they accept. See our FBI report apostille service.
Social Security or federal pension letter
A letter from a federal agency is a federal document and takes a federal apostille. Argentina wants a certified regular lifetime pension, and we could not confirm the wording the DNM accepts. Our page on Social Security statements has the mechanics.
Employer pension, bank or accountant letter
A private letter is usually notarized first, and the state that commissioned the notary apostilles the notary’s signature. Ask the DNM what form of income proof it accepts before you pay anyone to prepare it.
Birth and marriage certificates
A certified copy from the state or local registrar, apostilled by the issuing state. Several offices refuse notarized photocopies, so order a fresh certified copy. Start at our vital records by state hub.
Seven steps from checklist to Buenos Aires
- 1
Pick the route and read its page
Open the DNM page for rentista, pensionado or student and print it. Copy the list of documents exactly as written. Then ask the nearest Argentine consulate which US documents it expects in your case.
- 2
List every country you lived in
The pages require a criminal record from each country where you lived more than one year in the last three. If you spent two years in Spain, that record needs its own apostille or legalization on the Spanish side.
- 3
Order the documents
Request the FBI report, certified civil records and pension or income letters. Keep a log with the issue date of each, because the pages state no validity period and an officer may still ask how old a record is.
- 4
Apostille at the right level
Send federal documents to the US Department of State and state documents to the issuing state. Do not notarize a government record. Mixed packages split into two shipments.
- 5
Check the originals
Inspect each apostille for your name, the issuing authority and a number. Do not staple, unstaple or laminate a document after the apostille is attached.
- 6
Travel with the originals
Carry the apostilled set in hand luggage in a rigid folder. The DNM wants originals, so a lost bag means a repeat of the whole process.
- 7
Translate in Argentina
A traductor público nacional prepares the Spanish translation, and the Colegio de Traductores legalizes it. These are Argentine bodies, so schedule this after you land and keep the apostilled originals intact.
The clock is yours, because Argentina names no deadline
Most countries publish a number of days for how recent a criminal record may be. Argentina’s pages state none for the criminal record certificate or the apostille. That is not the same as unlimited. It means the number is not on the pages we read, and the DNM officer decides on the day. Treat a record as fresh when it is a few weeks old, and plan the apostille as the last step before the flight.
| Step | Who controls the time | What we can say |
|---|---|---|
| Certified civil records. | State or county vital records office. | Varies by state. Some publish a figure and some do not. |
| FBI Identity History Summary. | The FBI. | Confirm current timing on the FBI’s own page, which we did not read. |
| Federal apostille. | US Department of State. | Confirm current timing on the Department’s own page, which was not readable in our review. |
| State apostille. | The issuing state. | California mails in order received, and in person it is usually within 30 minutes. Wisconsin lists 7 to 20 business days at $10 and $35 expedited. Colorado lists $5 by mail. |
| Courier within the US. | Carrier. | Tracked overnight services exist and cost extra. |
| Translation in Argentina. | Your translator. | Unconfirmed. Ask for a date before you book a flight. |
The state figures come from state pages and our datasets read on 26 October 2026, and they change. Confirm with the office before you promise a flight date. The California Secretary of State is one example of an office that publishes its counter and mail rules. Our guide to common apostille mistakes covers what slows files down.
From the US document to the Argentine counter
Argentina wants its own public translator, so do not translate in the US first
The DNM pages require foreign-language documents to be translated into Spanish by a traductor público nacional, and the translation to be legalized by the Colegio de Traductores. Those are Argentine licensed professionals. A translation made elsewhere may not be accepted, and we could not confirm that it would be. Ask the DNM or the consulate before you pay for a US translation.
We provide ATA certified translations that are notarized. We are not a sworn translator, and we do not arrange sworn translations. If Argentina requires a traductor público nacional, you hire one in Argentina, and we ship the apostilled originals to your address there. Our guide to translation and apostille order explains the general sequence.
Our Spanish-language page on la apostilla para Argentina covers the same subject for Spanish speakers. Hablamos Español, and you can call (978) 424-4629 Monday to Friday, 10am to 5pm Eastern.
Six mistakes that send Argentina applicants back to square one
A scan instead of an original
The pages say all documents must be originals. A scan or photocopy of an apostilled record does not meet that wording.
A missing criminal record
Anyone who lived abroad for more than a year in the last three needs that country’s record too, apostilled or legalized for Argentina.
FBI report at a state office
The FBI report is federal. Massachusetts, for one, does not authenticate federal documents, and other states say similar.
Salary proof for a rentista
The rentista route asks for income of at least 5 SMVM from assets, not work. No apostille fixes an ineligible file.
A translator who is not Argentine
The pages name the traductor público nacional and the Colegio de Traductores. Confirm before you pay for a US translation.
A stamp on a government record
Several state offices refuse notarized photocopies of government records. Order a certified copy instead.
Three situations we see, written as typical examples
These are typical situations, not named clients.
A retiree on Social Security
A retiree in Arizona applies as a pensionado. The FBI report and the federal benefit letter go to the US Department of State. A marriage certificate for a spouse goes to the Arizona Secretary of State in Phoenix, which lists 10 to 20 business days by mail.
A landlord living on rent
A Boston-area landlord proves income from assets with an accountant’s letter. The letter is notarized, and the Secretary of the Commonwealth apostilles the notary at its counter for up to 3 documents while you wait. The FBI report travels separately.
A graduate heading to Buenos Aires
The enrollment certificate is issued in Argentina, so the US item is the FBI report. The student orders it early, sends it for the federal apostille, and carries the original in hand luggage.
We handle the American side and ship it to you
Boston Apostille Service is a private document preparation and courier firm in Tewksbury, Massachusetts. No state office, school or consulate is behind us. You send the documents or the details, and we look at them for free first. Then we sort each item into the federal or state pile, order certified copies where a state lets a third party do it, and prepare, track and ship the set to you in the US or in Argentina.
Our published rates are for Massachusetts state apostilles, charged per document with the state fee and return postage inside the price. Economy is $149.95, Express $199.95 and Rush $385.95. Rush moves fastest, at 1 to 2 days for Massachusetts and New Hampshire papers. Express runs 2 to 5 business days, Economy 1 to 2 weeks, and courier transit comes on top. A federal apostille or another state gets one flat quote from us before payment. Details sit on the pricing page and in how it works. A family file may qualify for a volume discount.
Start your orderFrequently asked questions
Does my FBI check need an apostille for Argentine residency?
The DNM pages say foreign-issued documents need an apostille or consular legalization. They do not name the FBI, so confirm which US record they accept. The FBI report is a federal document, and the US Department of State issues its apostille.
Who translates documents for Argentine residency?
The pages require a traductor público nacional, with the translation legalized by the Colegio de Traductores. We provide ATA certified translations that are notarized, but we are not a sworn translator and do not arrange sworn translations.
How old can my FBI check be for Argentina?
The pages we read state no validity period for the criminal record or the apostille. That is unconfirmed, not unlimited. Ask the DNM or the Argentine consulate, and keep the issue date of each record on a list.
Do I need originals, or are scans enough?
The pages say all documents must be originals. Bring the apostilled originals to Argentina in your hand luggage, and keep scans only as backups for your own records. A photocopy of an apostille is not an apostille.
Do I apply for Argentine residency from the US?
The pages say the applicant must be in Argentine territory. Assemble and apostille the documents in the US, then travel with the originals or have them shipped to your address in Argentina.
What income do I need as a rentista or pensionado?
Both routes name a minimum of five Salarios Mínimo Vital y Móvil, from assets for a rentista and as a regular lifetime pension for a pensionado. The peso value changes, so check the DNM page for the current figure.
Does Argentina offer a digital nomad residence or citizenship by descent?
We could not confirm either on the official pages we read. Ask the Argentine consulate that serves your state. The US-side rule stays the same: federal documents get a federal apostille and state records get a state apostille.
