Nevada Vital Records Apostille: County Offices, Carson City and a Timeline the State Will Not Quote
A Nevada vital records apostille comes from the Secretary of State in Carson City for a $20 fee, after you hold the right certified copy. Marriage and divorce copies come from county offices, death and birth copies from the state Office of Vital Records. Even the state’s own pages disagree about how long it takes.

Why a Las Vegas marriage certificate does not come from Carson City
A typical case: a couple who married in Clark County now lives in Valencia, and the Spanish residence file needs the marriage certificate apostilled. They write to the state Office of Vital Records, which only searches its indexes and issues no certified marriage copy. They have paid a search fee and still hold nothing. Nevada splits its records by type, and the split is the whole problem.
Marriage certificates come from the county office that handled the license. Divorce decrees come from the Clerk of the District Court in the county of the divorce. Death and birth certificates come from the Nevada Office of Vital Records in Carson City, or from a health district. Once you hold the certified copy, the Secretary of State apostille page tells you to send the order form, the document and payment to Carson City.
We read the official pages for this guide, but the Secretary of State site did not load in full for our research, so some points below came from search listings. Those are marked “confirm with the office.”
Who issues each Nevada record, and what the copy must be
| Record | Who issues the copy | What the copy must show | Copy fee | Extra step |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Birth. | State Office of Vital Records, Carson City, or a health district. | A state office certified copy. Photocopies are rejected. Health district copies: confirm with the office. | $25 at the state office. | None. |
| Marriage. | The county office that issued the license. Clark: County Clerk. Washoe: County Recorder. Other counties: confirm with the office. | Certified copy from that office. No notary certification, no photocopy. | Clark $20. Washoe $15 per copy. Others: confirm. | None. The state office only searches ($10 and non-refundable). |
| Death. | Nevada Office of Vital Records, 4150 Technology Way, Suite 104, Carson City, or a local health district. | A certified copy from the state office is the safe choice. | Not confirmed on an official page. | None. |
| Divorce. | Clerk of the District Court where it was granted. Clark: Family Court, 601 North Pecos Road. | Certified court copy. Whether it must be exemplified: confirm with the office. | Confirm with the court. | Possibly an exemplification. |
If a county and the state disagree about who issues a marriage copy, believe the county that sold you the license.
What the Secretary of State and the counties each want from you
The Secretary of State’s Office takes apostille orders at 401 North Carson Street, Carson City. Its fee page lists $20 per apostille, and it offers expedited service from $75 for a 24 hour turnaround, with higher tiers for faster work. The standard time is the oddity. The fees page and the apostille page of the same website give different figures, so we publish neither. Treat the office as the authority and ask it by phone or email.
For marriage records the Secretary of State says only certain officials may issue the certified copy: the county clerk, the county recorder or a person authorized under state law. Clark County’s fee schedule shows $20 for a certified marriage certificate. Washoe County’s schedule shows $15 per certified copy at the Recorder. The state form and the Secretary of State page disagree about whether other counties use the clerk or the recorder, so ask the county where the license was bought.
The same office also apostilles a Letter of Eligibility of Marital Status, which matters for a wedding abroad. Its clerks and recorders list helps you find the right county office.
From an overseas address to Carson City and back

Working a Nevada file from another continent
- 1
Name the county
For marriage and divorce the county is everything. Write down where the license was bought or where the court sat.
- 2
Order the certified copy
Contact the issuing office and ask for a certified copy for an apostille. Ask what ID or authorization it requires, since some records are restricted. Where an authorized third party is allowed we can help, and the free review confirms it.
- 3
Pick the destination of the paper
Have the copy sent to our Tewksbury office, to a relative or to a Nevada address you control. It should not make an extra trip abroad before the apostille.
- 4
Complete the Secretary of State order
The apostille order form, the document and payment go to Carson City together. We prepare the form and pay the $20 fee as part of your order and send the paper by tracked courier.
- 5
Check the result
Names, dates and country are compared to your passport and the foreign checklist.
- 6
Ship and track
Express couriers usually need two to five business days each way, and you can watch the case in ApostilleDesk.
Add the time to order the copy to the Carson City turnaround and the courier legs. Because the state will not commit to a standard time, tell us the deadline you actually have, and we will say plainly whether expedited service is worth the extra state fee.
Six ways Nevada files get stuck
A state search in place of a marriage copy
The state office searches indexes for $10 and issues no certified marriage copy. The money is not refundable.
Clerk versus recorder
Clark County uses the County Clerk and Washoe County the County Recorder. Other counties are unclear, so ask where the license came from.
A notary certification on a marriage record
The Secretary of State says a notary cannot certify it. Only the issuing county official can.
A district copy for a death record
The state pages do not say whether it is accepted. The state office copy is safer.
A decree copy with no check on exemplification
The Secretary of State pages we read do not settle it. Ask before you pay for the copy.
Relying on a processing time
The state’s pages disagree. Build in margin or pay for expedited service where a date is fixed.
Spain and Mexico, the destinations Nevada clients name most
Spain
Spain is a Hague country. A consulate checklist we read, the Boston one for the non-lucrative visa, asks for family documents such as a marriage certificate to be apostilled and in Spanish, with civil documents issued within the last 12 months. A consulate that serves Nevada may publish different rules, so confirm which one handles your application. If you need an FBI check as well, that is a federal document and goes to a different office.
Mexico
Mexico is a party to the Hague Convention, in force since 1995. The consulate pages we tried to read for residence requirements did not load, so we cannot tell you its document list or age limits. Ask the Mexican consulate or the receiving office exactly which Nevada record it wants, how recent it must be and whether a Spanish translation is required.
Check other countries on the HCCH status table. A non-Hague destination needs embassy legalization, see our apostille versus legalization guide. We can provide ATA certified translations that get notarized. We are not a sworn translator and we do not arrange sworn translations.
A Massachusetts desk for a Nevada file
Boston Apostille Service is a private document preparation and courier service in Tewksbury, Massachusetts, working since 2007. Nevada is far from us, and the state sets the pace in Carson City, so our job is to get the paperwork right the first time. We review your file for free, name the exact county office, help obtain the certified copy where Nevada allows an authorized third party, and send the order to the Secretary of State. Hablamos Español.
No price for Nevada is printed here, because the total depends on the expedite tier you choose and on the record. After the review you receive one flat-rate quote, and you pay only when you accept it. Rush is the fastest level we offer, and in Nevada its speed follows the Carson City desk. The pricing page and how it works explain the rest. Ready? Use the application form or phone (978) 424-4629 between 10am and 5pm Eastern on weekdays. Documents from other states are covered in our out of state guide.
We are an independent company. No Nevada office, school or consulate is affiliated with us.
Frequently asked questions
How do I get a Nevada record apostilled from abroad?
Order the certified copy from the right Nevada office, which depends on the record, then send it with the apostille order form and payment to the Secretary of State in Carson City. We can handle the second half and, where the issuer allows an authorized third party, the first. A free document review settles the details before you pay.
Can the state vital records office give me a certified marriage copy?
No. The state Office of Vital Records only searches marriage and divorce indexes for a fee and issues no certified copy. Marriage certificates come from the county office that handled the license, such as the Clark County Clerk or the Washoe County Recorder. Ask that office for a certified copy and say it is for an apostille.
How long does the Nevada apostille take?
The Secretary of State’s own pages give different regular processing times, so we do not quote one. Expedited service exists at a higher state fee. Phone the office for the current figure, then add the time to order the copy and the courier days each way before you set a deadline.
Is a notarized copy acceptable instead of a certified copy?
No. For marriage records the Secretary of State says a notary cannot certify the copy and a photocopy is rejected. Only the county clerk, the county recorder or a person authorized under state law can issue the certified copy. The same logic protects birth and death records, so order the certified original.
Does a health district copy work for a death certificate?
It may, but the Secretary of State pages we read do not say. The state Office of Vital Records in Carson City is the safest source, and the Southern Nevada Health District also issues copies for Clark County. Confirm with the Secretary of State before you rely on a health district copy for an apostille.
Where do I get a Nevada divorce decree for an apostille?
From the Clerk of the District Court in the county where the divorce was granted. In Clark County that is the County Clerk’s Family Court records at 601 North Pecos Road, Las Vegas. The state office only runs a search for a fee and issues no decree. Ask the clerk whether an exemplified copy is needed.
What does the Nevada apostille cost in state fees?
The Secretary of State charges $20 per apostille. Expedited service starts at $75 for a 24 hour turnaround and rises for faster options, so confirm the current schedule. Certified copies are extra and set by the issuer. Our own fee is separate, and we send one flat-rate quote before you pay.
